What is FAQ schema?
FAQ schema is structured data that describes a list of questions and their answers using the schema.org FAQPage, Question and Answer types. It is usually added as a JSON-LD <script> block, and it tells search engines and other machines exactly which text on the page is a question and which text answers it.
For a few years FAQ markup was a popular way to win extra space in Google results. That changed in August 2023: Google now shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For every other site the markup is still valid and can still be read by search engines and other tools, but it will not produce the expandable FAQ snippet. No structured data guarantees a rich result — eligibility is always Google’s decision.
This generator builds clean FAQPage JSON-LD in your browser, removes unsafe or unsupported HTML from answers, can import questions from plain “Q: … A: …” text and outputs matching visible HTML so the markup and the page stay in sync.
How to use the FAQ Schema Generator
- Type each question and its answer, or paste text in the Import from text box with lines that start with
Q:andA:. - Choose Plain text answers, or Basic HTML if your answers need links, lists or emphasis. Unsupported tags are stripped automatically.
- Reorder questions with the arrow buttons and remove empty rows. The validation panel lists anything that is missing.
- Copy the JSON-LD as a
<script>tag (or raw JSON) and, if you need it, the matching<details>or heading-based HTML for the visible FAQ. - Test the page with Google’s Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator after publishing.
Example
One question with a plain-text answer produces this JSON-LD:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "How long does shipping take?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Orders ship within 1–2 business days."
}
}
]
}
</script>FAQ markup guidelines that still matter
- Every question and answer in the markup must be visible to users on the same page. Marking up hidden or different text violates Google’s structured data policies.
- Use
FAQPageonly when the page itself (the site owner) provides the questions and answers. Pages where users submit answers belong inQAPagemarkup instead. - Do not use FAQ markup for advertising, and do not repeat the same FAQ block on many pages — mark it up once, on the page where it is most relevant.
- Answers may contain limited HTML. Google renders headings,
<br>,<ol>,<ul>,<li>,<a>,<p>,<div>,<b>,<strong>,<i>and<em>; other tags are ignored.
Adding FAQ schema to WordPress
The block editor has no built-in FAQ schema, but most SEO plugins add an FAQ block that outputs the markup automatically. If you add the JSON-LD by hand, paste the <script> into a Custom HTML block on the same page as the visible FAQ, or output it from your theme only on that page. Avoid doing both — duplicate FAQPage blocks for the same content add noise and can trigger warnings in Search Console.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will FAQ schema give my site FAQ rich results?
Probably not. Since August 2023 Google limits FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health websites. The markup remains valid and harmless, but for most sites it will not change how the result looks.
Is it still worth adding FAQ markup?
It can be, if the page genuinely contains an FAQ: it describes the content unambiguously for search engines and other consumers of structured data. It is not worth creating FAQ sections only to add markup, and it never replaces a helpful page.
Can FAQ answers contain links and lists?
Yes. Choose Basic HTML and use <a href>, <p>, <br>, <ul>, <ol>, <li>, <strong> and <em>. The generator removes scripts, styles, other tags and all attributes except safe link URLs.
Does the markup have to match the visible text?
Yes. Structured data must describe content users can see on the page. Use the generated HTML or keep your existing FAQ section word-for-word identical to the JSON-LD.
Should I use FAQ schema or another schema type?
Use the type that describes the page’s main content. Articles should use Article schema, businesses Local Business schema, and other types such as Product, Event or Recipe are covered by the Schema Markup Generator. A page can include an FAQPage alongside them.
